A Cup of Change: Healthy Drinks to Start the Day

January 02, 2020

The toughest battle I face every day is waking up early. I usually sleep around midnight and need at least eight hours of sleep. I'm not a coffee drinker (whaaaat?!) so I need an alternative energy-boosting drink. I am guilty of drinking carbonated beverages for breakfast which I plan to totally give up (finally!) in 2020 because it's really unhealthy. So for my cup of change challenge, here are the healthy drinks to start the day.

Lemon Water

I used to drink lemon-infused water for a few months but was not getting the full benefits because I don't drink healthy for the rest of the day. Lemon water is the easiest to prepare and the most inexpensive. I soak one large lemon (sliced and without seeds) in one liter of water overnight. I sometimes add a tablespoon of honey to have a hint of sweet taste. You can also add some mint leaves for an added flavor.

Drinking lemon water helps your kidneys and liver in flushing out the toxins from your body. I drink it first thing in the morning before having any food intake.

Coconut Water

I feel lucky to be living in the Philippines. The abundance of coconut trees in the tropical countries in Asia makes coconut water an affordable healthy drink option. I prefer cold drinks but I can have this hydrating and refreshing drink straight from the coconut shell. The coconut water has a natural sweet taste and rich in manganese, potassium, and magnesium. It also has calcium and sodium. Instead of drinking energy drinks, fill up your hydration bottle with coconut water instead. Coconut water also helps prevent the formation of kidney stones.

Green Tea

Green tea is said to be the healthiest drink on the planet. It contains polyphenols that helps in reducing inflammation. The amino acid L-theanine in green tea aids in improving your brain function. It helps you relax, concentrate, and be more focused. It is also proven to prevent cancer and boost metabolism.

Other benefits of drinking green include lowering the risk of developing  type 2 diabetes, weight loss, and protect your brain in old age.

A friend sent us a box of M&S Matcha Green Teabags for Christmas. Perfect gift for my "a cup of change" challenge for 2020.
