Why Sunburn Is More Serious Than You Think

Spending long hours under the sun without enough protection can quickly lead to sunburn. While mild cases may only cause redness and irritation, severe sunburn can lead to painful blisters, peeling skin, and long-term skin damage.

Dr. Carlos-Tanchiong advises immediately getting out of direct sunlight if you notice signs of sunburn.

Cooling the skin is one of the first things you should do. Staying in an air-conditioned room, taking a cool bath, or gently applying aloe vera and ceramide-based moisturizers can help soothe inflamed skin.

She also reminds people not to pop any blisters that may form, as doing so can increase the risk of infection and delay healing.

For pain and discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers may help, although severe cases may require prescription topical or oral medications depending on the extent of the burn.

The Importance of Wearing Sunscreen Daily

One of the easiest ways to prevent sun damage is by using sunscreen consistently, especially during outdoor activities.

According to MakatiMed, choosing a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is essential for protecting the skin against harmful ultraviolet rays.

Reapplying sunscreen every two hours is equally important, especially after swimming or sweating heavily. Many people also forget commonly exposed areas such as the ears, neck, and shoulders, which are highly vulnerable to sunburn.

Aside from sunscreen, wearing sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-protective clothing can add another layer of defense against harsh sun exposure.

If possible, limiting outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. can also help reduce the risk of severe UV damage, since the sun’s rays are strongest during those hours.

Why Acne Gets Worse During Summer

The combination of heat, humidity, sweat, and excess oil production can easily trigger acne flare-ups during Philippine summers.

Non-comedogenic sunscreen is ideal because it is less likely to clog pores or trigger blackheads and pimples. During hotter months, lighter gel-based or oil-free moisturizers may also feel more comfortable on the skin compared to heavier creams.

For body acne that develops on the back, shoulders, or neck, breathable cotton clothing can help reduce sweat buildup and irritation.

Fungal Infections Thrive in Hot and Humid Weather

Summer heat does not only affect the face. Sweat-prone areas of the body can also become breeding grounds for fungal infections.

According to Dr. Carlos-Tanchiong, conditions such as athlete’s foot, ringworm, jock itch, and yeast infections become more common during hot and humid weather.

Athlete’s foot often appears between the toes as itchy, scaly red patches, while ringworm typically forms circular rashes with raised borders.

Jock itch usually develops around warm and sweaty areas like the groin and inner thighs, while yeast infections tend to occur in skin folds where moisture gets trapped, including under the breasts or abdominal folds.

Keeping the skin clean and dry is one of the most effective ways to prevent these infections.

Loose-fitting clothes, proper hygiene, and avoiding prolonged dampness can significantly help reduce the risk. Over-the-counter antifungal creams may also help manage mild infections, although persistent symptoms should be evaluated by a doctor for proper treatment.

Dr. Carlos-Tanchiong also advises against scratching affected areas, since this may worsen irritation and potentially spread the infection further.
